Ribs Bench designed by Stefan Lie is now available in powder coated aluminium for outdoor enjoyment. Featuring the original design's signature flexible metal spine, Ribs Bench Outdoor continues to be simultaneously functional and interactive with its unique sculptural form.
"As its name suggests, Ribs is composed of a series of arching forms over a movable aluminium spine. In 1998 I wanted to learn about moulding plywood so I made the first version of Ribs in timber. But the form lends itself to many possible materials. Over the years it has been used in so many different environments and I have liked it in every single one." - Stefan Lie, Designer.
Over the last 22 years, the timber Ribs Bench has been used in offices and homes worldwide, including the iconic Sydney Opera House, Auckland Airport and more. With its new aluminium form, Ribs Bench Outdoor can withstand outdoor weather conditions yet remain light and movable. A fixed spine is available for high traffic commercial areas.
"I have fond memories of designing Ribs. Getting the geometry right while at the same time making sure it retains its organic appearance was challenging but fun. In 2003, to celebrate the 5-year anniversary of Ribs, I made a limited-edition version in polished aluminium. But it was difficult to make and I only produced two. So, I’m really happy to see it in aluminium once more." - Stefan Lie, Designer.
Ribs Bench Outdoor is powder coated in textured light grey, white, black or navy. Custom powder coat colours are available upon specification. Get in touch!
